Bought to try new NC author. Great!

I couldn't believe the richness of Hatteras Light. The characters are varied and engaging and the time period was one of great interest. A WWI episode set in America is rare, and, of course, the book was about so much more, and touched on the American experience of immigrants in the isolated parts of the country. The book was absolutely absorbing. Highly recommended and kudos to Mr. Gerard!

Good story about the NC Coast.

Book was written well, and contains a bit of history in this work of fiction. I will read more by this author.

This is a really great book and I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who loves historical fiction - especially fiction about the Carolina coast.

I vacation at the Outer Banks, in the shadow of the Hatteras Light, every year so I loved to hear about what the island was like in the past. It was a very intriguing story and will keep your attention from the first to the last page. I hated to see it end.

As a story I know it's a novel but I found it a little hard to believe that a u boat could roam the American shore shooting at ships without more attention from the American government. Regarding the writing there is something I just could not put my finger on but I struggled throughout to remember which character was which and who was related to who. I was frequently lost.

Once again, Phillip Gerard writes with great warmth and empathy. His story telling skills grips the reader and keeps them involved until the conclusion of the book.. A must read! All adolescents would gain a great deal by reading this great work.

I got this book for a 3 year old through a local literacy program. The child had drawn a picture about playing in puddles with his brother and sister. This is a cute book to explain to young children why/how it rains.

That you great for my children at school

Excellent Book !! The illustration are simple and don't take away from the complexity of the text. The author puts a difficult concept into an easy read. I used this book in a unit for rain with kindergartners they reacted really well to it and they asked many questions. I would recommend this book to anyone.

This is a brilliant book written about a young teacher who travels to the Alaskan wilderness to teach in a small village called Chicken. It is a true story, set in the 1920's and then passed on verbally in the 1970s. It is very well written and shows what life is like for the Alaskans, and what it was like between winter and summer before they had built roads to all the small settlements. I was astounded by the significance of winter in terms of movement via sled in preference to horses in summer but also by the ways in which the young teacher was taught to survive in this beautiful but very hostile environment. She "adopts" a couple of mixed race Indian children and gains the wrath of the whole community by her efforts to accept the First Alaskans as equally capable of learning and in need of The Three R's. Chicken is now linked to Fairbanks and Anchorage by a road so it would be dramatically changed. For this reason alone it is worth reading this book for the knowledge of how the people coped with such an extreme environment but also at the changes in race relations since the 1920s. Highly recommended - a very interesting read.

When I purchased this book, I was intrigued by the title. I like memoirs. I had no idea that this true story of a young woman's teaching assignment in a small village called Chicken in Alaska would captivate me to the point that I couldn't put it down. The author takes the reader through almost a year where she is teaching but also learning much from the villagers and her students. She was not looked with favor because of a friendship with a "half breed" and taking in two native children whose mother had died. She was treated badly, but in the end was respected. To say this is a great read is an understatement.

What a lovely surprise this was! I only read non-fiction and I wanted a light read this time. A young 19 year old teacher goes to the wilds of Alaska...I was thinking "Little House on the Prairie". What a surprise that there was so much more adventure than I expected. The first half is a lovely, sweet read. And the second half took me on adventure that blind sided me and did not expect (twists and turns). I highly recommend this book.

I learned more about the Native American culture by reading this book, than living 55 years near a Native American reservation. Anne was so young when she set out to teach in the wilderness, yet she had sound values and remained steadfast to what she knew was right. If I could give this book 8 stars I would. Well written, informative, and it touched my heart. Whenever I read a book and I continue to think about it, even weeks later, then for sure it's a good book!

A lovely story with an underlying message of acceptance. Living in Alaska among native peoples I was interested in what things were like then and if they have changed much. The treatment of natives in this account is sad and disappointing, even though it is important to view it through the lens of that time period.I would have enjoyed some photos of the characters included in the book. It would have brought the story to life and given additional perspective.The story itself I would rate 4-5 stars, but there were a few issues with grammar/editing that troubled me. The most distinct concern was that there seemed to be two different voices telling the story; one minute Iâ€™d be reading a beautifully poetic description and then be jolted by an unusual syntax. There were a few places where the word â€œcameâ€ was used where â€œcomeâ€ would have made more sense, but either one was awkward. Other problems for me were the lack of explanation of some terms like â€œOutsideâ€ which was used often. Since it is capitalized I assume it is a place, but where?What I thought was well done were the descriptions of mushing and the terrain. I was also impressed at how vividly the events and feelings were recalled and shared with the reader.SPOILER ALERT: I was also glad to see she eventually married Fred, it did not seem likely throughout the book. She seems like someone I would love to meet.

There are a few books that I truly love and this will be one of them. The book is the true life of Anne Hobbs who goes to a remote Alaskan village of Chicken, yes Chicken, in the 1920s to teach in a one room village school. She is only 19 years old but has inherited her sense of adventure from her grandma who is part Indian. I love books that take place in Alaska though I hate the cold, personally. I learned so much about that time period of Alaska and was surprised at how the Indians were viewed as almost social outcasts. The description of the bitter cold, snow and ice was so wonderful that I longed to get on my thermal underwear. Read this wonderful book. I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

This book is a breath of crisp frigid air on a cold clear Winter night. Young Anne Hobbs (the "Tisha") comes alive from the first page & the other colorful characters walk right in behind her. Robert Specht's story is very entertaining & informative. His depiction of life in the rugged old Alaskan wilderness is a big fat slice of historical reality & what a fascinating story it is! The descriptions of what it took to survive in a tiny Alaskan village without electricity or running water, snow & mud everywhere & few amenities, are vivid. Definitely worth a read! ðŸ‘ðŸ‘

This book held my interest from start to finish. I'd made a trip to Alaska a couple of years ago, so having traveled some of the same country, I was even more interested in the story. This book held my interest. I couldn't put it down! The descriptions of the scenery, the bigotry, and the unabashed insight into how people of different cultures often have trouble working together was especially well done. It's often not understood but merely tolerated, and that's the best that can be done. The description of how it is to live in primitive conditions with weather that is intolerable several months of the year was also well done. The human spirit of survival really comes through in this novel!

This is great book for anyone who wants to make their own rugs. It's very easy to understand the step by step instructions and pictures. Don't hesitate to buy this book you won't be sorry.

Not much in it for the type of rugs i"m interested in.

When I ordered this I expected something different. I wasn't wanting to use the bags of strips I have on a mesh base.

This book shows how to do both loopy rag rugs and shaggy. Some of the projects use both types. The accessories are some of my favorite projects. One features a basket that the edge is trimmed with rag rug and loopy rag flowers. There are some fun decorations that would make holidays and special occasions so festive.

Before starting my ophthalmology residency, I did my internship at a place where the interns on call were expected to just handle things. We covered the floor, the ICU's, the whole hospital. This book was an excellent resource to have available while on call and definitely made me feel a lot more comfortable so that I could refresh my memory before procedures. The book contains both descriptions and illustrations on how to perform a wide variety of procedures ranging from intubation to placing a variety of catheters and lines, Gi tubes, placing chest tubes, tapping joints, repairing certain types of lacerations, and performing a few specifc nerve blocks, lumbar punctures.etc.The book is just slightly too big to carry around in your lab coat, so I just kept it in my call bag. The Ferri book and the "Critical Care Medicine" pocket-book in the Current Clinical Strategies series were what I used while on call along with this procedure book

For a book that conspicuously describes itself as a "pocket sized manual", the Manual of Common Bedside Surgical Procedures is curiously large. Measuring 6 inches in width from spiral binding to cover edge, the manual is the exact same dimensions as the pockets of 3 of my lab coats (all by different manufacturers). Thus, it is impossible to put this book in the pocket of a size 38 lab coat. Nonetheless, it is the only major complaint this reviewer has about this book.Written by the Halsted Residents at Johns Hopkins Hospital, the book covers most of the common bedside procedures any surgical, IM or ER resident may encounter. Many handbooks cover a few of these topics (ie, nasogastric intubation, urinary catheterization,sutures, etc.) but not nearly in depth as does Chen's work. From Airway Management,through vascular access procedures, lumbar punctures, splinting to needle biopsies and joint injections the book covers everything well. Each procedure includes:-indications for the procedure -contraindications -anesthesia needed (if any) -equipment ( I LOVE having a "shopping list" handy when I'm doing procedures) -patient positioning -step by step technique instructions -complications and management after the procedureSeveral of the procedures also have graphics to aid in the positioning of the device,incision site,or relevant anatomy.The book does provide a cautionary warning in the Preface that experience and knowledge cannot be replaced by simply following directions in a book. Despite this statement, I was suprised that some of more highly specialized procedures did not contain enough information about the difficulty or the suitability for a house officer. For example, when the vermillion border of the lip is disrupted, a 1 mm error in matching up the edges is visible to the naked eye. Because of this and the potential for scarring on the face, most surgical residents I know prefer to leave such procedures to Plastic Surgeons and/or their residents. It would perhaps be prudent for some of the more specialized and/or potentially troublesome procedures to include mention of the pitfalls and the possible need for consultation.All in all, the book is a valuable resource for the fresh resident and I would recommend it to anyone doing a surgical, medicine, or emergency medicine residency as an asset to their book collection.

A kid's book from about 100 years ago. I've bought 11 of these and given all away. Now I ordered 3 more. Instead of kids learning the "recreation" of poking the screen on their phone, this has more worthwhile stuff like how to build hot air balloons with real fire, taxidermy, firearms, animal traps, how to build a boat and travel on a river, etc. and hundreds of pages of things like that. .This is the 1983 edition. They took some of the best stuff out of the subsequent edition, so buy this one, not the newer edition.

This is a fine book. We homeschool so this will give us projects to work on for a long time to come. I don't have any complaints with the contents. Others have covered that better than I did. However, I do have one gigantic complaint, otherwise, the book would have received 5 stars. The binding on this thing is terrible. The glue is stiff which makes this thick book hard to open. Because it is a thick book, you have to pull the pages back a bit which caused the spine on ours to crack within 20 mintues. Grrrr. I would have preferred to spend the money for a decent hardback or a much better paperback. This is obviously a parent copy and we will have to look for a PDF version online.

I read this book in 5th grade when I checked it out of our school library. I remember needing to learn how to tie a certain knot which is why I checked it out. At the time I thought it was pretty interesting but I basically left most of it unread and returned it when my knot project was finished. Reading it later as an adult I wish that I had given it more attention when I was a kid because it is a wonderful book. It has a place in every home, particularly homes with children(big and small alike) Another interesting point is the languauge of the book. Being that it was written well over 100 yrs ago the book has a bit of a different dialect. However it's pleasant to read. It's nice to see even a book on leisure topics written more formally and it's a shame more books aimed at children and parents aren't written this way.This book would be a great gift to any family looking to do something on a weekend other than watch TV. Books like this should be on the required reading list in elementary schools, not some of the garbage that's there now.

This is the second generation of male-type children I've given this book to! In this age of gender-sensitivity and political correctness, sassy independent girls would love it also! I've found that parents highly enjoy the information and team-building projects it features. One of the BEST gifts I've given!

Purchased as a gift for a 12 year old boy with only minimal interest in reading, this is one book he has voluntarily picked up to peruse again and again. It also proved addictive for the 30 year old brother-in-law during the Christmas visit, so it is evidently a great one for boys of all ages!

I am the grandmother who gave this as a gift. I did not read it word for word, but it does appear to give adolescent boys a handy guide to how to do things when a father is not able to be there to teach them these skills.

Love this book! I bought it for my son at age 8. He was a creative type that liked experimenting and making things and this book gave him many ideas of things to try and the how-to instructions. Many of the skills included in the book are skills no longer taught to boys, but several still captured his interest. My husband also used it for ideas for activities for church father-son campouts he had to plan.

Just like I remember this book as a kid. It's an excellent look into how people lived 125 years ago, but many of the projects can still be done today. Dan Beard was one of the early leaders in the Boy Scout movement, and this book is similar to the early editions of the Boy Scout handbook. Despite the name, this book would be great for Boys and Girls, if they are into outdoor living.

Get out of your funk with this book! It's the PERFECT book to help boost yourself up and recognize your worth. My brother in law totally laughed when I told him I was doing this but it is honestly life changing and something I highly recommend to anyone who is going through a funk! It felt like I was working through some serious stuff without having to actually talk to a live person about it hahaha. Starting with self love is so important because without our own self love, how can we accomplish anything else in life or see anything else. I LOVE the format of this book, from the feeling words, to actually stopping to think about things, to actually writing things out, this book is so insightful!! This is the perfect combo of thought provoking and spiritual guide as well as actual worksheet/workshop. HIghly recommend!

In each of our lives we all go through many different phases. Good, bad, happy, sad, lost, found, confident, and unsure are just a few of those feelings caused by situations or our state of mind. This book is the perfect workbook to help discover how to love your true self in any situation. There are many, many exercises to work through to help you discover yourself. Many times with just have to cope with life. â€œCoping is comprised of the active methods you use when faced with stressors.â€ An example of an exercise is 100 ways of coping. Doing this exercise will help to achieve wellness. I recommend this book for anyone. We all need to be mentally healthy.

What I really like about this book is that it's not your average "self-help" book, rather, it's more like a series of guided journaling sessions. I think it's a worthwhile thing for anyone at any point in their life to take some time for self-reflection and assessment, which is exactly what this workbook walks the reader through. I appreciated the examples and prompts that were relatable and easy to start responding to. I'd recommend this workbook as something to take on a retreat or weekend away and use to recenter yourself. It would make a great gift for a friend who is always talking about trying to change their perspective about themselves or who really wants to get back into journaling.

I thought about getting this in the Kindle format so I can work on it anywhere, but I'm so glad I went with the paperback! First of all, this book is GORGEOUS. It's sleek and appealing, from the layout to the worksheets and the diagrams - it's seriously aesthetic perfection. More than how it looks, however, is the complete depth of subject matter. Thoughtfully broken down into sections, it's clear that this was a labor of love from the author. Guiding you from one self-exploration to the next, this book is chock full of ways to examine yourself and your life in a new light. The sheer number of ideas and interventions conveyed is stunningly impressive. I love going through it myself, and I see myself recommending it to many, many clients in the future. A one-of-a-kind in this genre of self-help books!

This is a book that everyone at all ages and phases of their lives could benefit from. Often we get too caught up in our daily and weekly lives that we forget to take time for ourselves and introspect on how we can improve our own lives.
