If this book were fiction it would be a compelling read. It is fast-paced, action-packed and difficult to put down. In some places, it’s hard to believe. The tragedy is that it’s not fiction but the true story of 23 Marine aviators of VMF-422 who flew their F4U-1D Corsairs planes into oblivion.The reader will find himself shaking his head time after time as one officer after another failed to follow proper procedures or protocol when preparing and directing The Flying Buccaneers to their next island hop. So, the group of young, superbly trained pilots in their gleaming new blue Corsairs took off on a bright sunny morning only to find themselves battling a terrible typhoon by early afternoon. With near zero visibility, radios that malfunctioned and an unfamiliarity of the region, these young boys battled the punishing weather and cruel elements, determined to reach their destination. They were thrown about the skies, split up and lost their leader. But they persevered. All but six survived. All the planes were lost. In January, 1944, the U.S. Marines suffered their greatest aviation loss when Marine Fighting Squadron 422 attempted to make an overwater transfer from one base to another. The custom was for twin engine planes to provide escort because of their navigation skills and familiarity with the region. Instead, the Marine commander specifically denied the VMF-422 commanding officer's request for an escort. When the twenty-three Vought F4U Corsairs encountered an unanticipated cyclone during their flight, they were scattered to the wind. Six pilots died and a board of inquiry followed. This tale is familiar to those that follow WWII aviation but this book should not be overlooked. Mark Carlson has brought together all the relevant details of the men, their mission, the disaster that ensured, and the response of the Navy and Marines. Carlson leaves no reader behind. Whether WWII aviation is a new topic for the reader or they have deep familiarity with the era, The Marines' Lost Squadron is written in a manner that is both engaging and informative. What has been a mere footnote in Marine aviation now has received the attention it deserved. Job well done.
What a superbly written book! I bought two additional copies to pass around because I wanted to share this incredible account with my USMC friends. The extraordinary amount of factual research Mr. Carlson put into writing this event better known as the “Flint Lock Disaster†was staggering. His personalization of the story, explicit detail when they meet the storm head on, and subsequent rescue of the lone survivors makes this book extremely hard to put down. Best of all you can feel the dedication he puts into writing this book to once and for all tell a story that affected so many lives yet managed to get covered up. In a sense his partial title “Lost Squadron†is also about a “Lost Story.â€
My father was part of the groundcrew for one of the pilots lost in this tragedy. He's 95 years old now. For decades, I have heard stories and names associated with VMF 422. This book brought the men and their stories to life. Images of the young men and the airplanes they flew enhance the pages. There is meticulous research and backstory to this book, and Mark Carlson has really done well to bring so many of the puzzling pieces of this incident to light. I bought the book for my father and some of my family so they can have my father sign it, and Mark was gracious enough to sign all our copies as well.This story was very personal to me. Mark Carlson wrote an excellent book sourced heavily on first-person accounts and information. It's neat to see all the names in there my father spoke about so often; he really respected Major MacLaughlin. Now I can put faces to the names of so many. Breeze Syrkin must have been a hoot to talk to, and Curly Lehnert. The characters came alive, and the brave men of VMF 422 are being remembered not only for their sacrifice, but for their humanity.
Mark's careful and vivid writing style is well fitted to telling this gripping story. Hard to put down.
This book has it all: history, facts, details, personal interviews, and beautiful descriptions to put the reader right in the event. It's as gripping as fiction but the clear, supportive pictures are a unmistakable reminder of the reality of this tragic loss. Thank you, Mr. Carlson, for honoring these men for their unselfish service for our country in such a historically important time.

Thoroughly researched and essentially a history of this marine squadron (VMF-422) during WWII. This is a very little known and untold story of survival of one of the worst disasters in marine corps aviation history. Could not put this book down.
