Easier, Simpler, Faster was one of those rare finds created by the Amazon search engine. This book is a little obscure and expensive, but it provides something that few books do -- a clearly articulated business view of working with IT at an operational level. This makes the book invaluable for IT professionals to understand what your business peers think of you and say about you when you are not in the room.Jones and Cunningham are executives at Lantech a mid size privately held company that has adopted Lean Manufacturing Principles. The book is about how lean changes IT and IT's use by discussing how Lantech implemented Lean and what changed in IT. The book is filled with first person accounts and thoughts regarding this practice. Here is short summary of the chapters that will provide some background on the book.Chapter 1: Lean Basics to define your customer value eliminate wastes and align IS - discusses the fundamentals of lean principles and their application in technology. This chapter outlines the five lean principles, seven deadly wastes and 13 guiding principles for IT in a lean environment.Chapter 2: Applying standardization to IT systems concentrates on the benefits of standardization across the enterprise. Not a whole lot new here for IT professionals, but good insight into how business people think about standardization.Chapter 3: Integrating your order entry into the information highway, discusses the order entry process which is critical in Lean Thinking. The discussion holds some interesting ideas for how simple IT systems can be and how too complex they have become.Chapter 4: Selecting, enabling and customizing your ERP system looks at Lantech's choice of an ERP system. Frankly this chapter is of little value to IT professionals as it outlines a fairly straightforward process. What it does do however, is point out how complex IT professionals often make simple processes.Chapter 5: Kanban: reducing inventory and managing pull with suppliers; concentrates on explaining the Kanban process and its implementation or lack thereof in systems. This chapter was interesting in how it discussed the use of processes and facilities (Kanban cards) to radically simplify something that is at the heart of most IT systems.Chapter 6: Reshuffling MRP to align Kanban and Lean provides an interesting discussion regarding how Kanban can radically simplify and eliminate the need for MRP modules in ERP systems, particularly for those products under Kanban control.Chapter 7: Mission to go live, building teams and overcoming barriers recognizes the inevitable change management issues associated with ERP implementations. Here the size and scale of Lantech comes into play and may reduce the value to some readers.Chapter 8: Capturing, managing and changing information looks at the heart of IT - information and the fact that lean is about creating transparency and information sharing not information hoarding.Chapter 9: Lean accounting systems addresses a constant nemesis for business process transformation and change - namely how do we account for it. A good discussion that can help remind the business executive that accounting exists to serve them, rather than the other way around.Easier, Simpler, Faster is a good book when you consider its context and take that into account. Lantech is a midsized business with a small IT department organized around an ERP system that is not SAP or Oracle. This means that some of the specific comments are more beneficial to a mid sized enterprise than the corporate IT professionals that may be reading this review. It makes no difference as the book provides a good account of lean principles and how executives think about IT.It is pricy at more than $30.00 and it is light on specific IT advice so pick up this book if you want to understand lean principles, their application and implications for IT.
One of the few books (and probably also the first) that gives some practical experience in the battle between IT and Lean. It gives thirteen guiding information principles and explains more or less why these principles are valid. These 13 principles are as such usefull and maybe even eye-opening. But the book of about 150 pages could be limited to 10 pages, which would be probably stronger and more insightfull than these 150 pages
A great book!
Why did it take so long to get a book out about lean and IT? I'm not sure, but for a first effort, this is a great start. It doesn't have all the answers but it's got a great deal of experience and learning built into it based on the experiences of Lantech, a great lean story in its own right. Jean Cunningham, a co-author on this book, was also co-author of Real Numbers, which I believe is still the most useful and long-term thinking book on lean accounting. I expect that many books will follow on lean and IT, but they will likely be useful if they try to build on the excellent foundation provided by Easier, Simpler, Faster.
