Review

Sheldon Bull is not only the funniest man on two feet, but one of the mostbrilliant when it comes to explaining how to be funny, and how to organizeyour creative ideas into the sitcom form. It is the clearest, best, and to my knowledge the only how to that tells writers step by step how to write for and break into the fabulous world of TV sitcoms-- Blake Snyder, Author of Save the Cat: The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need

Ok. So Sheldon Bull kind of sounds like a made-up name. And, if you're anything like me, at first you'll be unsure as to what exactly is being implied by the book's title. Don't be discouraged; this is the most powerful TV writing resource I've come across. The book's stated mission is to guide you through the process of specing an existing TV show, and it's arranged roughly as follows: selecting a show to spec (first ~20% of the book); the brass tacks of actually composing a quality script (~60%); and, finally, how to unload that script on the right person, and what your life is going to look like if said transaction goes smoothly (the last ~20%).Keep in mind that the meat of the book applies to more than just specing, though. It helped me finish a Seinfeld script I was working on for fun at the time, yes, but this is also an invaluable resource for someone trying to write an original pilot (I hear those are all the rage at the moment). Why is this such a good resource? Because it’s the most logical, digestible, non-mystical breakdown of good television writing out of everything I’ve read, watched, or listened-to on the subject. And I’m saying that with a Kindle and bookshelf stocked with similar works, some of them bearing names like Mckee and Goldman down the spine. As far as what that digestible, logical, non-magical stuff is…I’ll be brief, but basically Sheldon breaks down the way a sitcom’s Premise combines with the traits of its Main Character(s) to create a Formula that generates stories week after week. Furthermore, he gives us Seven Story Points on which to hang those wretched, underdeveloped story ideas of ours. This all may sound simplistic or anti-art or whatever, but as Sheldon points out toward the end, a good deal of our most celebrated sitcoms – both in a critical and commercial sense – adhere to these principles much more often than they stray.I don't really know why I'm telling you this, by the way. You, the prospective consumer, will probably be my competition as we both lay siege to the world of sitcom writing in the near future. But hey – this book delivered pretty hard, and I felt obligated to do this as a means of facilitating sales. So have a nice day. Or night. Friday night, more specifically, according to my calendar as I finish typing this. Which means I’m going to put on a collared shirt and drink 3-7 Heinekens.–Danny

Lots of screenwriting books are dry as dust. Not Elephant Bucks. This one is that rare combination of easy to read and informative. It's clear, concise, entertaining, instructive and eminently practical.Bull offers specific guidance on how to structure a sitcom. He explains what belongs where. As important, he shows the reader logically and engagingly how to go about putting the elements in place. He uses specific (and very entertaining) examples that made me go, "Ohhhhh! That totally makes sense!" Having "Elephant Bucks" is like having a great and experienced teacher right there with you.Sheldon Bull has credibility: He has done this stuff. Check him out on IMDb and you'll see his slew of credits, from "Newhart" to "M*A*S*H" to "Coach" to "Sabrina the Teenage Witch." So it's pretty clear the guy knows about writing for television. In "Elephant Bucks," he ably transitions from television writer to teacher. We aspiring writers are lucky he did!

Very solid book about writing sitcoms - you can check how to create spec script from premise to complete sceenplay, and how to break in to business (part not for me - I live and work in Poland). If you read only about writing for cinema this is good book showing you how to handle story for TV. It coud be better without so many repetitions - I took off one star for this.

I just finished "Elephant Bucks", and felt compelled to express my gratitude to the author for creating a such a comprehensive compendium on TV sitcom writing. His brevity while discussing show structure and specificity regarding spec creation details have instilled confidence and faith that script development can be (and is) a logical process. I firmly believe that many of the tools he has provided (such writing the dialogue first as a drama) will prove extremely valuable as I learn and grow. The book also excels at informing the reader what to expect beyond the script, and I especially appreciated the candor with which he tackles softer subjects like agent relationships, responsibilities to the show runner, and working with (and around) executive demands. I am grateful that Mr. Bull elected to share his technique, time, knowledge, and experience to illuminate the path from aspiration to realization. I look forward to personally thanking him someday for properly preparing me for my first spec script, my first pitch, my first sale, my first day as a staff writer, ad infinitum.

Sheldon Bull's, "Elephant Bucks" blew me away. It's by far the most in depth and knowledgable book on TV writing out there. Be sure to give this a read. Finally a book about TV writing by someone who is in the industry (30 year career in Television).

I've read a lot of books on writing and TV writing, but I have to say, after reading ELEPHANT BUCKS, it clicked. I've written sitcom specs, thinking I understood, but after reading this book, I felt like I needed to rewrite the scripts I'd written.I wish I'd had this book before I entered the ABC/Disney and WB fellowships.

"Elephant Bucks" is one of my favorite reads. As a TV student pursuing comedy writing, this book could not be more effective in communicating everything one needs to know about writing a spec script, making connections, selling your scripts, and working in the industry. The guidelines are simple and effective, and Sheldon clears up a lot of misconceptions about writing, agents, executives, etc. which has been very helpful to me. If you share the same passion for TV writing that Sheldon has, there is no better resource for the beginning writer, or one who needs to brush up. I highly recommend this book.

Elephant Bucks is the best TV sitcom writing book out there. It teaches you structure and format which is the most important part of TV writing.
