No book on Bonsai is going to fulfill all your needs and I would not try to add much to others who have rated this five stars. that being said, one of the things I really like about this books is when it discusses each type of tree , in the upper right hand corner, it gives some specifics that anyone who wants to pursue Bonsai should consider such as, site location( sun or shade); Water requirements, fertilizer requirements, when to repot, when to do any trimming in relation to season and how to take the seeds to create new trees. These above items are summarized in a little 2inch by 2 inch box in the upper right corner--excellent!I used to thin when I first began, who needs and this genus and species stuff--wrong! each tree has its own requirements and this book "nudges" you to start to keep a file on each tree you buy to make sure, first of all, that it does not DIE on you. Yes, I raise my hand and say for me, I agree with all those who gave this five stars. I do not necessarily disagree with those who gave it four stars. Remember, you need a lot of books, videos, classes, etc.

I am a beginner and was pleasantly surprised at the enormous amount of information regarding Bonsai it contained. Look no further, this book covers more than enough information about the art, care of the plants, cultivation, identification, tools, etc. packed full of information.
Most of the info found in this book is readily available online and also is nearly the exact same as in "The Complete Book of Bonsai" also by Harry Tomlinson except in smaller paperback format. Does not go into nearly as much detail as I hoped.
I was starting to get bored as a retired Senior and wanted to get back into caring for and raising Bonsais. As a beginner, I chose Harry Tomlinson's book "Bonsai" and found it extremely helpful. I had purchased another book for beginners but found it disappointing. In Tomlinson's book, listings of plants, care of them, dictionary, glossary and index were very helpful. I bought three Bonsais that are between fifteen and twenty years old respectively and started two of my own that are seven years old each. I want to manage them well and think I can do so since I have lots of patience, time on my hands and have the helpful advice of this book. I have researched other books also but this one is what I need now.Thank you Harry Tomlinson, for a job well done!

this book has everything you need to get started, not a be all end all book to be sure but it will give you the techniques and the tools to get started as well as a tree by tree quick reference guide to general care of over 200 trees suitable for bonsai. a great read for the beginner.
