I highly recommend this book for everyone. Whether you're just considering having a baby or will be giving birth in the near future, Heart & Hands: A Midwife's Guide to Pregnancy & Birth is the one book that seems to cover all bases. I believe it's intended to be a midwifery textbook, if that's any indication as to how thorough it is.I picked this book up in preparation for our first homebirth. I had read reviews from other homebirth moms who highly recommended it. I began reading the book the instant I received it, and it met my expectations. Not only was in a fabulous natural childbirth resource, but it also gave detailed instructions on how to deal with nearly every possible situation, both in pregnancy and during the birth. Elizabeth Davis is careful to remind the reader of the safety and normality of a low-risk, natural childbirth.I had some nursing experience before my first daughter was born, and my husband is an paramedic. Both of us were very pleased with how well written and medically accurate Heart & Hands was. There are diagrams and illustrations that greatly assist the reader in understanding certain situations, like how to handle shoulder dystocia during birth. The back of the book contains charts and forms for use during the pregnancy up to after the baby is born (prenatal care forms and a detailed APGAR chart, for example). This book was an extremely valuable resource for me, as it left me feeling truly educated on all the possible outcomes of pregnancy and childbirth, along with the proper ways to handle them. It was like my "birth bible", especially when the time came, as our midwife didn't make it to my birth and my husband and I delivered the baby ourselves. I wasn't at all nervous about it as I felt very prepared for the situation partly based on what this book taught me. I have re-read it during every pregnancy since then.Again, I recommend this book to everyone. It's a powerful eye-opener to natural pregnancy and childbirth.
Great book! It helped me have three waterbirths, two of which were at home. I am a nurse and nurses get brainwashed in school to see birth as a complication. This book helped me see birth for what it is - a natural, beautiful, empowering process. Photos are a bit outdated but get the point across. Diagrams are very helpful. Information is wonderful. It's like having a wise midwife and friend guide you through your journey. If you are interested in becoming a midwife - get this book! If you want a natural birth, and don't mind some medical terminology, get it, too. All of my pregnancies I spent getting as educated as I can about natural birth. This book was the most helpful single resource I've come across. We need to revive the art of midwifery (I mean the kind described in this book; not typical OB/GYN type), and more women need to become aware of the amazing experience of natural birth. I believe there is nothing like birth at home. It's the way to go if you want to develop a strong bond with your baby from the start. In my opinion, it's the way to go if you want the best birth.
I am a self study midwifery student and this book is excellent for me. It is very well written and easy to read. The information is thorough and presented in a way that makes it easy to understand. Elizabeth Davis is an amazing writer and her tone in this book speaks of years of passion and experience. This is definitely a must have for anyone interested in birth! I read an earlier review that said this book was pornographic and I just want to say there aren't that many naked shots, and if you are uncomfortable seeing a naked laboring woman, obviously midwifery is not for you. A woman's laboring body is something beautiful that should be appreciated, and attitudes like that are what make women feel ashamed of themselves. No woman should feel shame while giving birth, or doing anything else for that matter! Anyway...I highly recommend this book! :)
Full of lots of information. Was my main resource for my most recent pregnancy and birth, which was UP and UC. I also did loads of internet research for more precise information about more technical things, but this was a great book to have on-hand. It had sections I didn't need, as it's written for midwives and includes things to cover with patients and their spouses like how the relationship is going and talking about STDs (what do they call them now, STIs?), in addition to information about lots of tests that we weren't getting. The back also includes blank "chart" and record sheets, which I copied and used to keep my own prenatal records, including blood pressure, pulse, fundal height, FHT (fetal heart tones), baby's position, and edema and dilation (near the end). I was happy that this book was recommended to me, and if the Lord blesses us with more children I'll be referencing this again.
I got this book from my library, and liked it so much I had to own it. It has everything! Davis walks through every step of natural labor and delivery, as it would be with a midwife. She is extremely thorough and fun. She addresses the emotional aspects of labor, as well as the physical, and gives specific ways to have a more relaxing, enjoyable labor and birth. She addresses many complications that may arise, and exactly how midwives generally deal with them. I got through this book very quickly because it is so interesting. It is great preparation for a natural, midwife-attended birth, and may convince many to switch from an O.B. to a Midwife because of the personal, caring approach to birth that radiates from this book! This is a must read for women who want to explore their birthing options. Don't miss out!
This book has fueled by interest in midwifery from the moment I saw it on Amazon! This is a FANTASTIC resource if you want to learn about midwifery! Get it! Get it today! Get it right now! I know there is an updated version, but this one was one of the foundational texts in midwifery! Almost every program in existence uses this text. Especially good if you are apprenticing or self training!!!!
