The thing I love most about books set in contemporary London is that the humor is always so different from American humor! I'm not sure what it is, but anyone I talk to agrees - British humor and American humor are just different. And sometimes, that means things are lost in translation, and jokes may go over your head if you're used to one over the other. Not the case in this book! I was laughing a lot, in complete understanding of what was going on, how tragic and humorous parts of the book came across, and I had a lot of fun reading it.Five years ago, Cat's boyfriend left her to fulfill his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian in Australia. Ever since, she has given up her own similar dream to work a boring desk job, one that gives her stability but lacks the excitement she used to get being on stage. When her ex returns to London, curiosity drags her to one of his shows, hiding in the back and hoping not to be seen. But she is seen, by none other than her ex's brother, Harvey. Charmed by her antics and wanting to spend more time with her, Harvey begins connecting with her and they go out on several occasions. The only problem is that Harvey is off limits due to her history with his brother, and Harvey doesn't want to take no for an answer.Cat and Harvey were utterly charming in this contemporary romantic comedy! Cat was someone who found herself in a life she didn't want, and things just kept going wrong for her, in increasingly hilarious ways. When her best friend, Kelly, began to help her see the light behind her past actions, she realized that maybe she was the cause of a lot of her problems. Harvey helped her see that too, as he healed some of her old wounds and made her see that could be loved. A gentle lovebug of a man, he was one of those characters I read every so often that make me want to jump inside the book just to give him a hug. Super loveable, caring, and understanding. There wasn't much to really complain about with him. Cat had so many lessons learned in this book, and it was great that Harvey could be there for her. The ending...my goodness, folks. If you want to give up on this book, just read to the end. Trust me.This is the first book I have read by Keris Stainton, and I look forward to reading future books by her! Anyone that can make me laugh out loud while reading has a gift.**I receive a free copy via NetGalley and this is my honest review.**

This author is totally new to me and I was attracted to this book because it reminded me a lot of the sort of Brit Chick Lit I used to read years ago in my late teens and early 20s. This novel delivered 100% on that nostalgia with the best of the British Rom Com chicklit trope world. Meet Cat, a somewhat down on her luck but cute and funny if a little needy and self-sabotaging woman, who gave up her passion for stand up after a bad break up with an ex. Like all the best chick lit, Cat has a fairy godBestFriend, Kelly, who is perfect in every way and more or less Cat’s voice I’d reason. To me, this novel shines the brightest in the exquisite friendship between Cat and Kelly. I love novels that celebrate female friendship and this is certainly one of those. They had the wittiest dialogue and the most unbelievably #friendshipgoals friendship! This novel is also billed as a romance and the central conflict is supposed to be Cat’s attraction to her ex’s younger brother, after meeting him 5 years post the break up. So, there’s supposed to be a hint of forbidden love, but I found myself not caring isn’t the least about that conflict. In part, it could be that I didn’t “feel the love” and I don’t think this novel handled the romance aspect as well as it did the humor and the more serious themes like abandonment, fear of conflict, family, friendship and forgiveness. There were some pretty weighty themes in this light-hearted book. I just felt very meh about the romance aspect.Lastly, I received an advance reading copy of this book from Bookouture through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review and I’m not one to say I like a book just because I got it for free. All in all, I enjoyed reading this- I didn’t find it as laugh out loud funny as I would have maybe a decade ago, but it made me smile and I was frequently amused and I would read more by this author.

I really enjoyed this story, my first by this author.Cat's life is in a holding pattern, and has been since her boyfriend left her to make it big in Australia five years ago. Same job that bores her, living with a flatmate (and boyfriend) who is a slob and inconsiderate, and following the same routine day in and day out, week after week. She admires her best friend's life (handsome, supportive, loving husband and adorable son, plus a rousing blogger business) and wishes she could have the same. But knowing that everyone leaves eventually (first her dad, then her ex) Cat is reluctant to put herself out there; why bother when it's all going to end in heartache?Every one of us can relate to Cat. Sometimes we look around for an adult, only to realise we're it. How did we get here? What happened to our dreams? Where is our happily ever after? Each one of us has to decide if we're going to step out of our comfort zones and grow up. Or at least learn to fake it better.Stainton's writing is clever, and moving. Her characters are fun and smart. The situations and growth that Cat experiences made me cheer for her, and hope that we can all live our best life. Bonus points for writing a child character without pandering to stereotypes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever loved and lost, and lived to love again. And anyone who just likes a rousing good story in general.
