This is not one of Isabel Soto's best adventures. It lacks luster when it comes to information, which is usually what her adventures are about. Yes, we find out about some myths: pirates don't bury their treasures, they don't have prisoners walk on a plank, and there is nothing romantic about their lives or deaths. If people get maimed, very often they'll die from infection. Pirates don't go after gold alone, but they also go after any goods that can be sold. Isabel gets this information while she is a prisoner in a pirate ship. I would have expected more information on privateers; famous pirates, such as Sir Francis Drake and female pirates; reasons for the growth of piracy (one good reason was that colonies found it cheaper and more convenient to deal with pirates); and a chapter on modern pirates. I've seen more coverage on topics in her other adventures, for instance, Mummies, The Titanic, Martial Arts, Pompeii, and Great Wall of China.I still find it's OK because it's well organized, it has text features that enhances reading comprehension and builds vocabulary, and the text is a myth buster.
Reason for Reading: I've enjoyed other books in this series.Great introduction to the world of pirates and privateers in the 1700s. Isabel's time travel is more believable than in the Egypt book I just read, as her popping up does startle the natives, so to speak. Isabel is aboard a British merchant ship when it is attacked by pirates, then she and the ship's doctor are kidnapped and taken aboard the pirate ship. Explains the life of a pirate, how the sailors became pirates in the first place, the difference between pirates and privateers and the fact that pirates still exist today. Interesting and exciting.
