The teachers at our elementary who used tales from this book in our puppet show project were all favorably impressed with them. Most of us had never read most of the tales before, which made it exciting. The tales come from around the world, across cultures, which made them extra enriching for our students.I have given it four stars, rather than five, because some of the pieces are a bit "over-written," with some purple prose and excess length. These concerns might not be concerns in true "readers' theater," but if you want to stage one of them, you'll need to do some revising.
This is a great resource for young children. It can be used for school or have at home for group play. Children love playacting. The book makes it simple to use and aids you in a clear way how to put on a play. The stories are wonderful.
I found this book really helpful when I first started my own little drama business for preschool children. They loved it and it really helped the little shy ones come out of their shells.
Perfect book to read with your child, grandchild, any child! First we find the country on a world map and discuss what we know about the region. Then assign several characters to each of us. As we read our parts to each other we try to use different voices for the characters. Kids love it! (And love you too).
This was great for stories from around the world.
I had hoped for a some plays with more depth but these are fun for younger children. I have written my own portfolio of playscripts based on local myths and legends and I'm afraid I like mine better!!
I've used several of Aaron Shepard's reader's theatre plays, including The Magic Brocade and The Gifts of Wali Dad in this book, for intergenerational worship in my Unitarian Universalist church.It's a great way to involve all the generations in performance, requiring almost no preparation or rehearsal. Reader's Theater conveys a message in a way that's accessible to children without being too "babyish" for the youth or adults.A number of kids regularly ask when we're going to do reader's theater again "because it was so much fun!"
